YSJ Conference 2018 – University of Nottingham

On the 17 September 2018 the annual Young Scientists Journal conference was held at the University of Nottingham. In the morning there was a talk by Phil Moriarty, who is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham. He was presenting about the connection between heavy metal and quantum mechanics and explained complex ideas like Fourier Transforms. This talk was particularly interesting and opened a completely new world of physics for most people there.
After this, there were tours around the departments. In the Physics department we looked at their nanoscience, with machines capable of manipulating single atoms. There were also telescopes, including solar telescopes which were very impressive.
Pete Licence, a Professor of Chemistry, also spoke about environmental issues and how we should go about fixing them. He was very passionate about this topic and clearly inspired everyone in the room.
Following this, there were many talks about things like the future of engineering and how to get involved in science while at school and perform serious research. We at the King\’s Canterbury Hub are feeling particularly inspired and getting ready to do two independent research projects ourselves this year.
