Chernobyl shelter construction may be halted

A new shelter being built over the remains of the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl may be put on hold because not enough money has been raised for construction.

Not enough money has been given by donor nations to build the shelter, which is going to house the hundreds of tonnes of nuclear fuel rods and the remains of the reactor and control rooms. Only half the money that was set out to be raised was received by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The shelter is in the form of the dome, and once completed it is said that it would be able to cover St. Paul\’s Cathedral, London. At the moment there is a sarcophagus covering the wreckage, which thousands of people risked their lives to build 25 years ago this year straight after the disaster.
