Neutrinos beat speed of light time record?

Recently, the European particle physics laboratory, CERN released some results from a 3 year experiment, timing how long neutrinos (a type of subatomic particle) take to travel the distance between CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland and Italy’s Gran Sasso National laboratory, Opera where they were detected. On average it appears that they are travelling faster than the speed of light. Since this seems to defy Einstein’s theory of special relativity – that nothing can travel faster than this – clearly, it has been met with a lot of scepticism from the scientific community. This is somewhat the desired effect so that any unidentified systematic error that has been missed could be identified by anyone who can, worldwide. However, there is the possibility that if no errors are found, if this is the case, an explanation will be needed…
