Oranges are one of the most popular fruits on the planet and for good reason. Not only do they taste nice but they are bursting with vitamins and minerals. In this article I will be going over some of the benefits of oranges and why you should eat more of them.

Vitamin C:

First of all, as everyone knows, oranges are full of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is vital for the production of the polypeptide collagen which is found in bones, skin and muscles. Vitamin C also has antioxidant properties which means it protects the body against the damage caused by free radicals. If someone is lacking this vitamin then they can develop scurvy, nosebleeds, joint pain and inflamed gums. Vitamin C can also help boost the immune system and fend of viral infections. It can also help heal cuts.

Vitamin B1:

This vitamin is needed in order to convert carbohydrates into glucose which would then be used for respiration. Furthermore, vitamin B1 is used to keep nerves and muscles functioning properly and to maintain healthy eyes, hair and skin. A lack of Vitamin B1 can cause many problems for the body such as: trouble digesting carbohydrates, fatigue, depression, heart issues, cataracts, Alzheimer’s, breathing difficulties and many more including confusion and nerve damage.

Folic acid and Fibre:

Folic acid is another form of Vitamin B and it is also very essential as it works alongside Vitamin B12 to make red blood cells. Furthermore, it is very important that pregnant women receive enough folic acid as it reduces the chance of the baby developing spina bifida which is a defect of the spinal cord and brain.

Dietary Fibre has an important role as it ensures normal bowel movement and lowers the amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Additionally, fibre can help to control blood sugar levels, reduce the risk of kidney stones and even aid with weight loss.

Calcium and Copper:

Finally, oranges contain calcium and copper amongst other minerals that haven’t been mentioned. Calcium is needed for healthy bones and teeth, clotting blood, sending and receiving nerve impulses, secreting hormones, maintaining a normal heartbeat and contracting and relaxing muscles.

Copper is also useful as without this mineral it can lead to a drop in the amount of white and red blood cells, irregular bone growth, poor heart function and it helps the body to absorb iron which causes anaemia if the body doesn’t contain enough of it. Copper is also needed by enzymes in order to function effectively and copper is also required for the proper function of the immune system.

In conclusion oranges are extremely beneficial to your health as they contain so many important vitamins and minerals including ones that haven’t been briefly talked about. Moreover, they are low in calories in addition to having no cholesterol and no saturated fats.
